# Records and citations

> Source records, the fields they carry and how to cite them.

A **record** is one row from a publisher's dataset: a sale, a permit, a tax bill, an assessment. The API returns it as the publisher wrote it, with a citation.

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `record_ref` | Permanent record id. Every version of the record shares it |
| `kind` | Record type, for example `sale`, `permit`, `account`, `assessment`, `tax`, `building` |
| `source_id` | The source dataset. Look it up in [`catalog`](/api-reference/lookups/list-sources) |
| `jurisdiction` | County code the record belongs to |
| `published_at` | When Quoin published this version |
| `citation` | Publisher, dataset and the date Quoin published the data |
| `data` | The full source row, with field names exactly as the publisher wrote them |
| `about` | On [`records`](/api-reference/property-data/list-records): the entity the record is attached to |
| `q_ids` | On [`search`](/api-reference/search/search-records): every entity the record is about |

Field names and formats differ between publishers. A sale price might be `PRICE` in one county and `sale_price` in another. `catalog` lists each source's fields.

## Three ways to read records

| [`summary`](/api-reference/property-data/get-property-summary) | One best value per canonical field across all sources: `year_built`, `bedrooms`, `full_baths`, `half_baths`, `living_area_sqft`, `assessed_total`, `last_sale_price`, `last_sale_date`. Each value carries its citation and up to 10 `alternatives` from other sources |
| [`records`](/api-reference/property-data/list-records) | Every current record about an entity and the entities linked to it, optionally one `kind` at a time |
| [`search`](/api-reference/search/search-records) | Records of one kind across a jurisdiction, filtered on source fields |

## Versions

When a publisher changes a record, Quoin publishes a new version under the same `record_ref`. [`history`](/api-reference/property-data/get-record-history) returns every version, newest first. `removed: true` means the publisher stopped carrying the record.

## Citing data

Keep the `citation` with any value you show or store. Some publishers require attribution when you share their records. See [Publisher notices](/source-notices).
