# Owner lookup

> Find records by owner name, and owners by property.

## Property to owner

Owner names are part of the source records. Read them with [`records`](/api-reference/property-data/list-records) on the parcel or tax account, for example `kind=account` in D.C. or `kind=ownership` in Loudoun.

## Owner to properties

Use [`search`](/api-reference/search/search-records) on a source's owner field in one jurisdiction. Each result's `q_ids` lists the entities the record is about.

Owner fields by jurisdiction:

Find others with `catalog`: look for fields named like `owner`, `grantee` or `buyer`.

## Things to know

* **Names are text, not people.** "SMITH JOHN" and "JOHN SMITH" are different strings, and one name can belong to many people. Confirm with the address before acting on a match.
* **Prefer `prefix`.** Most sources write the last name first, and `prefix` is faster than `contains` on large sources.
* **Sales name both sides.** A sale's name fields can hold the seller as well as the buyer, so a match is not always the current owner. Check the record date and the current tax account.
* **Some owners are withheld.** Owners the publisher marks as private are not in the data.
